all-the-blues-in-the-sky-40469
All the Blues in the Sky

All the Blues in the Sky explores friendship, loss, and life with grief in this poignant novel in verse and vignettes authored by New York Times bestselling and Newbery Honor author Renée Watson, who shares in an author’s note at the back her own exploration of grief in recent years. Sage's thirteenth birthday was supposed to be about movies and treats, staying up late with her best friend and watching the sunrise together. Instead, it was the day her best friend died. Without the person she had to hold her secrets and dream with, Sage is lost. In a counseling group with other girls who have lost someone close to them, she learns that not all losses are the same, and healing isn't predictable. There is sadness, loneliness, anxiety, guilt, pain, love. And even as Sage grieves, new, good things enter her life-and she just may find a way to know that she can feel it all. In accessible, engaging verse and prose, this is a story of a girl's journey to heal, grow, and forgive herself. To read it is to see how many shades there are in grief, and to know that someone understands. This resource is recommended as fiction that could be read aloud as a whole class, a book that could be self-selected for independent reading, a book that could be used for targeted instruction, or even used in a healing circle led by school supports where needed. Grief literacy is an important element of mental health literacy which is part of Health Education curriculum, and this novel brings this topic to life through common reading and writing elements practiced in Language Arts curriculum. It is recommended that teachers read this story on their own before it is used in various ways. The youth who participate in the ‘grief group’ alongside Sage are all grieving losses of a loved one for different reasons. Of note, on pages 45-47, we learn that one of her peers’ brother was killed by a police officer. These pages may be challenging for some readers. It is important to approach this material with sensitivity and ensure that appropriate support is available for students who may find these themes distressing. Given the intense subject matter, readers should be prepared for emotionally challenging content. Discussions of these topics should take place in a safe and respectful environment. Educators are encouraged to consult the Teaching Sensitive Subject Matter document available on the Nova Scotia Curriculum website before using this resource in the classroom.
